It's liberal and wonderful. You can love it even if you are not a liberal, because everyone loves "perks". The area in Austin is just about the best in Texas (lots of lakes, hills and natural beauty) and it is close to San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and the Gulf. The motto of Austin is "Help Keep Austin Wierd". I call it San Francisco on the Colorado. It's one of the top 10 least expensive school for the money according to most years of evaluation in the published magazines on that topic.
It's the capital of Texas. The students have local clout. The residents actually like having students in the neighborhood. It's hot, specially in the summer, so drink plenty of water in the summer. But there's A/C everywhere and lots of places to take a cool dip. You don't have to drive much because the campus shuttle buses will take you around town.
Packed yet? There's a week "orientation" for students. Take it if possible. My suggestion: Use a bike. Live on campus and join a greek club if possible. Enjoy.
