I'm gonna be stereotypical and say ...country music and line dancing.

Well the previous poster is sort of right... there is a lot of country, but it's more folksy, bluesy, singer-songwriter country. You won't find Tim McGraw or Carrie Underwood clones here, but you will find the folks who write songs that Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood have covered.

There is also a totally different alternative, teenage, rock culture. The band Spoon is from Austin.

Anyway, the whole point of the music scene isn't what genre, but rather the relationship between the musicians and the community. If there is an Austin band or singer that you are really in love with, you go to one of their shows and you might find yourself in a medium-to-small crowd of people who are just as passionate as you are. The musicians acknowledge this and play like they are playing to their best friends and family (which sometimes they are).

The intimacy of the performance is what I love about Austin's music scene.

The first poster doesn't know jack. Real Texas swing is easier found in Gruene than Austin. The alternative music scene predominates in Austin, but in truth, they have a bit of everything. My favorite place on 6th street was a killer rockin' piano bar called the Alley Cat Cafe, but there is a nasty rumor that it has closed down.

Best bet is to check out the local entertainment web sites. They're listed below.

There is a FANTASTIC indie scene in Austin, if you are into acoustic/folk/indie type rock.
The blues scene is good.
The rock scene is good, but a little screamo for my taste.
There are a lot of guys playing the bars that have been doing it for years... Most of the bands here know what they are doing.

As someone who gets out 1-2 times a week for a live show, I gotta say Austin has a pretty great music scene. There's tons of bands, every genre you can think of, and tons of great venues - from clubs to warehouses to people's backyards to coffee shops to byob bars.
If you want to see the American Idol tour, or Justin Timberlake, etc, Austin is not the place, but for most everything else, it is good.
I like showlistaustin.com the best for local show listings.

There's really the entire spectrum of music in Austin but I'd most agree with those that say the alternative/indie genre has a majority position.

Catch it while you can though - the scene just isn't what it was 10 years ago.

Every march theres an event called SXSW where bands of different genres gather and perform. Also theres ACL (austin city limits), a 3 day event where there a couple of stages and lots of bands, usually rock, perfom there!! This is usually around Sept or Oct.

Some bands from austin are Cruiserweight, Riddlin Kids, and Dynamite Boy.

EVERYTHING IS IN AUSTIN!!
i love growing up here, it's fantastic
with just a quick walk through downtown you can get some damn good blue/folk/country but if you go more south-congress area you get the whole indie/punk scene thing goin on

it's way cool.
