I love Austin!
The city is the seat of the State gov't and also the home of the University of Texas at Austin campus.
Austin bills itself as the live music capitol of the owrld, because there are a high per capita ratio of live music venues.
There are a constant flurry of festivals, fairs & events in and around the city.
Lots of rivers & lakes for aquatic fun.
Austin can be boring, but only if you have zero imagination.
Drop me an e-mail when you get here & I'll point you in a couple of directions for fun. Most likely, however, you'll make a ton of friends in a few days & have a blast the entire time your here!

Austin is like a cross between San Francisco and Houston. It's got a nice, sort of funky vibe to it in the central and south areas. However, there is some sprawl and traffic and some conservative areas in the outskirts. The crime rate for a city of it's size is pretty low. Obviously it exists, but I never feel unsafe here unless I venture north to the Rundberg area. Stay away from there.
Austin is the most liberal place in TX and also the most eco conscious. "Keep Austin Weird" has basically become the city's mantra. Austin prides itself in being different. Rest assured, you can still get nice aTexas feel here and enjoy great BBQ-- but you'll also find it has a thriving music scene, art scene, it's gay friendly, racially diverse and basically one of the most laid back places in the Southwest. It's known as "Silicon Hills" because Hi-Tech is big business here. Lots of people that graduate from UT or Texas State end up making Austin home so it has one of the highest populations with at least a 4 year degree.
There are two big events in Austin. One is the South by South West music, film and interactive festival in the spring and the ACL fest in August. If you're lucky, you might be able to get into a filming of Austin City Limits (not to be confused with the festival of the same name) and see some big names in a tiny venue. Pick up an Austin Chronicle just about anywhere for listing of things on any given week. Austin is home to Texas's only nude lake and one of the best, clearest lakes in the state. On the negative side, the summers are scorchers and if you're an allergy sufferer, be prepared! Taxi's can be hard to come by, but the bus service is pretty decent and cheap. If bats scare you, stay away from the Congress Bridge.. you'll find millions of them. For us that live here, property taxes have sky rocketed and some feel Austin is loosing it's unique feel due to the massive amount of people we add each year. The sky line seems to change year to year. Still, most of those folks that move here are pretty laid back, too. Every first Thursday of the month, South Congress hosts 'First Thursday'- check out the area and get a feel for the hippyfied Austin of yesteryear. You might even get a glimpse of Leslie, our local homeless transvestite that spends his life in a glittery thong and has run unsuccessfully for mayor. You have to take a dip at Barton Springs and hike up Mount Bonnell for a great view. Enjoy a sunset on the lake at the Oasis or take diving lessons, wakeboarding lessons, ski lessons, etc, on Lake Travis. If you're short on cash, the University of Texas Film and Theatre dept host really well made productions for just a little $$ if not free. You can also find some state parks with overnight camping, like Pace Bend, that are really nice. There's really a lot to do if you venture out a bit.
If you run out of options in Austin (although not sure how you could), remember that Austin is centrally located, you can get to San Antonio in about an hour (more or less), Houston in three and Dallas in about 4. There's a cool little town about an hour west named Fredricksburg that has wineries and is really picturesque. Great for a day or weekend trip. You'll also find a huge water park in New Braunfels about 45 minutes south. When in Austin, pick up the local's favorite vodkas Tito's and Dripping Springs.. the only legal distilleries in Texas.
Best of luck!
