My best advice is to stay inside the airport, because it might take as long to go back through security as you have for a layover. If you go down where the train is to go to a different concourse, if you don't go on the train but use the people walkers downstairs they have some different art exhibits to check out. My other suggestion would be find a restaurant have a drink or something to snack on and then maybe do some shopping. Its not worth leaving the airport during a lay-over. Downtown Atlanta is several miles away from the airport and Hartsfield is the world's busiest airport which includes the fun of going through security again.

Like the other answer - unless you've got a long layover (more than 3 hours), I would stay put and eat and/or shop at the airport. If you have time to get away and don't want to head downtown on the train - just hop in a cab and have him take you to the new shopping center on Camp Creek Parkway (just a few miles up the road). There's a Barnes & Noble, Target, Clothes stores, restaurants, etc. Have fun.
