Well.... it depends on how much and where your travelling. How do you feel about crawling in threw the window of a train, and standing amoung 200 people per train car for unknown hours? (It's actually quite fun!!, and you can probably use the door.. hehehe)
Spring festival and New years is the time where everyone MUST, if at all possible, go home to be with family. Therefore, the trains are going to be incredable full, incredable late, and you'll probably be standing unless your leaving from Beijing or someplace really big. Last year, the trains during the holiday season where 20% more busy then the year before. I don't know the exact number or anything, but I was there. This was central mainland (Zhengzhuo to Xi'an), so maybe the south was better.
My advice. Get your tickets as early as possible. Hope for seats or sleepers, and travel on the actual New year day, as it should be a bit less busy. Bring instant noodle cups, as there is a hot water at the end of every car (you can buy them on the train too) and if your really brave, and have no fear of standing room. Bring a roll of plastic or newspapers and stake out an aisle way, or place between cars. Where crappy clothing, and bring lots of extra ready to eat food so you can make freinds. (maybe I'm insane)
If its a short trip (2-3 hours) try to get a spot in the dining car and eat slowly, or sit until they boot you out. Uh....
Not sure what else to tell you, maybe I'm the only person who is willing to do this. If not, email me with any other questions. (I feel insane?!)
