My husband just received his permanent resident card. He was
born in India. He wants to visit relatives in Tibet. Our question is can he travel for 2 months to Tibet (China) with just a chinese visa and green card and no passport. |

He'll need his Indian passport with the Chinese visa, but he doesn't need a US passport (since he isn't a citizen). The green card should be irrelevant until you are coming back.
My husband was born in India too and also has a green card. He still needs his passport with a visa to travel to most countries, although when you are dealing with annoying border patrol people, the fact that he has a green card does help. We've traveled to Mexico many times without either a visa or a passport and just his greencard. I don't know if this is totally legal or if the border patrol there just didn't care. I imagine that if you are going to such a highly controlled area as China and Tibet, you better have everything just in case. Can't Indians travel to Tibet without a visa, anyway just with his Indian passport? |

The answer depends upon which country you planning to visit. A passport is required by many countries upon entry to their country. Also, a document indicating proof of citizenship is always required to re-enter the United States. In some instances (Mexico, Canada, etc.), a valid driver's license and a birth certificate will suffice as the proof of citizenship; however, as indicated many countries require a passport to gain entry to their country and the United States State Department "recommends" a passport as evidence of citizenship in ALL cases.
