It's easy to buy air tickets on line or at the airport even at the last minute. Staff speak English. Local transport may be more difficult due to language problems. Taxi drivers usually need the destination you want to go to written down in Chinese characters.

Its a long way to travel across but if you are a keen traveller it shouldn't be too bad. The key is always to pace yourself when doing long journeys.

very easy, you will probably meet others to travel with, I meet foreigners from every country in the world who are also travel ling. Trains can be a bit tricky and nerve wracking the first time, if you hire a porter, be prepared to run like hell to keep up with them -- make sure to book in advance so you dont end up sitting in the "dining car", hard wooden benches all night, done that, some scary drunk men in there.

Travelling by plane is cheap, easy -- be cautious of strangers approaching you on the street with bus tours, etc

Your hotel can fix you up with transportation, let them know you dont want a tour or a guide, just a ticket -- good luck ! People you run into at hostels will have lots of info for you too

I use www.elong.net and have been very happy with them, check it out, and no I dont work for them, I am just a happy customer, their service is free, and up to 50% off tickets and hotels

very easy...
country is safe, people are nice...
driving licence won't help, they require local one...
as for Tibet -- you'll need a special permission to be there coz some foreigners are trying hard to cut it from China and guy must make sure you aren't one of those...

It'll be more difficult than Thailand since it's a bigger country but it is still very easy.
The trains run throughout the whole country so you can go anywhere by train, and train tickets are quite inexpensive.
The roads in China are also very developed, as in reach throughout the country. If you can rent a taxi for a day or week or whatever you can bargain. You can take the one road to get from Beijing to Xi'an on the other side of the country. There are also long distance buses.
I don't think planes are as convenient in China. The airports are always a good ways outside of the city, they are lots of regulations, and planes often run late. They are fast though and can get you anywhere in the country.
You can look online for hostels, or just find one when you get there. You can find things pretty easily if you wander around.
The big cities all have subways, which make it very easy to get around and almost impossible to get lost. The buses are also easy to navigate if you can read some chinese characters.
You will get ripped off riding buses unless you speak a little Chinese to the driver and look confident. If you look like a tourist who doesn't know where he's going, the driver may take a longer route.
Tips: remember that mostly everything can be bargained in china including long distance taxi rides and hotel prices (as long as you aren't bargaining for the already cheapest room). If you are student, ask about student discounts for everything!

It is very easy to travel around a China. You can choose a China tour operator online. Search China tours or China travel on google and you will get many of them. Just choose one of them and travel around China.

I've traveled in China alone, with a friend and with an elderly lady. All without Mandarin. I've never had a problem.
Get a phrase book, maybe one of those small thick Chinese made dictionaries and you should be OK.
