I travelled by train between Hangzhou and Shanghai for about 90RMB.
Trains were incredibly modern and clean. People are sophisticated and friendly in these 2 cities. It is useful to know some mandarin or know a mandarin speaker - as not much english is spoken - especially in Hangzhou. I've been to Bangalore and Goa in India - China was much cleaner - the people in China did not try to rip you off or hassle you like in India. China is 1000 times better in my opinion. I would not go back to India but would certainly return to China as it is safer and cleaner. I recommend the Holiday Inn in Hangzhou - it is a lovely hotel - conveniently located. £25 per night for a 4 star hotel. Very good service. Shanghai Nan Railway Station is super modern and comfortable. You can get straight onto the subway from there. Meals were very cheap in Hangzhou - you can live comfortably for very little |

Tours will be the most expensive item unless you fly around. Train fares are cheap and food is pretty safe from anywhere once you've become accustomed to it. But at the beginning the amount of oil in some dishes might give you dodgy stomach.
Beer in restaurants can be as little as 2.5 RMB a bottle. Here's the site I used the most during my 6 year stay there, I'm not kidding..6 years, but I would advise anyone to visit. Just watch your bags and pockets in crowded areas. I never had trouble but many have. Most buses are 1 or 2 yuan flat rates in most cities. All the info is at this site, including rail, plane and bus times. A small pocket phrasebook with Chinese characters is useful and will definately draw a crowd in some of the less touristy areas. Most students learn English at Primary school these days, and I taught a good number myself, so the younger people will be able to help you more than many more elderly folk, but some people are a bit shy to try using it. |

Very easy to travel in china just make sure you have your phrasebook with you if you can have your destination written in chinese characters, you normally have to book your train tickets 24hrs in advance, most young people students speak some english and will love to help. Sleeper buses are a cheaper alternative, you might like to try that. True it is easier to buy flight tickets but much more fun to travel by train.

China is the world's fourth largest country for inbound tourism. Great Wall of China, Changbai Mountains, Jiuzhaigou Valley, Suzhou, Temple of Heaven and Yellow River, etc are some popular attractions. The currency of China is the renminbi (RMB) or yuan. Carrying reasonable good cash to pay for drinks, snacks, buses, taxis and small souvenirs or other small purchases is always suggested. The total expenses of tour solely depends upon you.
