I have traveled to many cities in China and currently live in Shanghai. I would say that my hands down favorite is Qingdao. It is on the ocean, has mountains at its doorstep, and is relatively clean. It is an expensive place to live, but I really enjoyed traveling there. There are tons of other great places in China. It really depends on what you are looking for.

I would like the Beijing and Shangrila.
Beijing is the capital of China. Could be find lots of ancient buildings and culture things in that city.

Shangrila is a beautiful city in Yunnan. A bit similar like Tibet. I like its nature sights.

Xi'an: I like it's many historical sites, especially the terra cotta warriors, and the fact that you can actually meet the farmers who were digging and unearthed them in the 70's when they were first discovered. (of course it's easier to meet them if you speak Chinese, because they don't speak English). Good food, many things close together that can be seen, generally one of my favorite cities.

Beijing has great historical sites, too. The Great Wall is outside of Beijing, the Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Hutong (historic homes of the city) and more. Beijing has good shows to see and a fun night life as well.

Tibet and Qinghai provinces. Qinghai is closer to the rest of China, and has many Tibetan farmers anyway. There are also some good Tibetan Budhist monestaries to see there as well as the largest salt water lake in China. Qinghai has blue skies, rolling, grassy hills, and clean air. It's a great place to go to experience a very different side of Chinese culture, more off the beaten path. Tibet is different as well, though it's more of a desert, but still clean air. You can visit the home of the Dalai Lama (who is now in exile). I think the reasons for Tibet are pretty obvious.

Qingdao is great for seeing the ocea, and Laoshan is kind of a national park with daoist monestaries, and waterfalls, and great scenic hiking. You can also tour the Tsingtao brewery that makes the most widely exported beer from China. Maybe you've had it at a Chinese restaurant before.

Those are of the places I've been, but I also hear fantastic things about visiting Sichuan province, and Suzhou, and Hangzhou. If you like big cities, Hong Kong and Shanghai would also be good.

I would like to go back to Beijing and Shanghai.

Some new cities that I'd like to visit would be Xi'an, Lhasa, Kunming, Harbin, Turpan, and Hong Kong.
