You're going to have a hard time finding good fares to Vientiane, not many major airlines fly there, you might look for good fares to Bangkok or Hong Kong and then look for a flight from either city or overland from Bangkok. You're right about fares being sky high to Asia lately and the Olympics in Beijing don't help either. If you can wait until October Cathay Pacific has fares for a little over $1,000 after Oct. 1 to Bangkok, China Airlines (Taiwan) is usually the best fare to many Asian cities from SFO. You might check some of the Asian travel agencies in the Bay Area and the Sunday travel section of the Chronicle for consolidators. If you can't wait until October, $1,500 to Vientiane isn't that bad these days. Good luck.

Try airline websites themselves..........you can get an idea of what airline sites to go to by going to sites like travelocity, orbitz, priceline, hotwire, etc. and seeing the airlines that actually fly the route from SFO to VTE. Honestly I know you aren't close to LAX but you may want to look into a LAX to VTE flight because it is more likely to return a better price.

VTE is unfortuantely not "too common" of a destination,

If I were you, I would look into Thai Airways, Eva Air, Vietnam Airlines, Air China or China Eastern.

If that doesn't work, look for a flight to Narita, Bangkok, Beijing and than look for a flight to VTE (the idea is to go to a major Asian hub and than connect to VTE because there are airline that fly from those Asian hubs to VTE that don't fly to the US at all.)

Best of luck!!!!!!!!! I hope I helped!

I'm happy to try my strategies and methods for you, but *when* do you need to travel? Please update your question with this very important detail. I'll check back to complete my answer for you.

===== ok, thanks for adding dates

If you could be just a little bit flexible, cheapest I see is $1545 USD r/t total with all taxes and fees. This leaves Sep 30 and back on Jan 5. (Your exact dates are $300 more currently). This found with consolidator CheapOAir.com.

I also checked for low-cost air services at VTE, and see that Air Asia fly from Kuala Lampur quite cheaply -- $49 USD r/t around your dates. So, I checked SFO and surrounding airports (OAK, SJC, SMF) to KUL with BookingBuddy (link below) and found $984 via Cfares.com (free "gold" membership). Add the $49 Air Asia fare, be very careful to allow plenty of time between flights, and you're doing this trip for $1033.

Try www.cheaptickets.com

My recommendation is from San Fransisco, go to bigger airport LAX, then fly phillipines airlines (usually this is the cheapest airline from SEAsia to LAX), then from Manila, take some budget airline (airasia.com/ valuair/ or AirPhillipines) to Vientiane.

You can get that around USD 1200, i think
