A lot of people will travel at Spring Festival, so trains will be very crowded. You might want to fly instead. Trains will be less expensive, but you need to get your ticket early because they will be very crowded.

Since you live in Beijing, I'd suggest going somewhere warmer down south. Chengdu is an interesting change of pace from Beijing. It's a big city, but with a very different personality than Beijing.
There is a huge panda reserve nearby in Ya'an (about 2 hours by bus from Chengdu). The panda reserve area is called "Bifengxia," and it is a very beautiful place with waterfalls, gorges, etc. to hike around in. It's a very beautiful place, very mountainous and very green. Wear a jacket though, because at the higher elevations it can still get chilly.

Sanya (三亚) is tropically warm all year round. But as mentioned before, it's also the most expensive time to travel and tickets are hard to buy.

hi there.i come from Liao Ning province( the first province of the Three Northern Provinces of China).it's sad when i know you like warm places to travel.but i just like to tell you something differently about The North!!!
In L.N.,eps,in counties,we have Northern food at home.we can have firework outside as well as amazing snow-fall. everything's different from southern things. you will hear Guo Nian Hao(happy new year) with liao ning accent(menly and strong) but it's warm in your heart that you never knew.
and just tell ya some cities in liao ning,Liao A( shen yang-the capital of Liao Ning) Liao B(da lian) Liao C( an shan) Liao D( Fu shun=====>>that's my HomeTown) you can find northern traditional things in Fu Shun,it's like Man-Tribe(Man-community) and Korean-chinese community too.dont know why there are so many korean-chinese folks in Fu shun and shen yang, but they are cool tho i cant understand their language.(im han tribe) very interesting.i think you would hear of Qing Dynasty,The King's or man-tribe's from xin bin county Fu Shun city.very northern. they are friendly more than you think,(plz dont make a stereotype on Northerns,we are not like what you think) we dont only eat suan cai dun fei tiao but we have our own spacy food.we are more friendly than other chinese folks,i guess.( plz no offence, bcoz im telling the truth) if you wanna see Snow-fall,ball;and every single thing on ice, if you wanna try northern food,if you wanna what the Northerns are really like, plz come to North. Welcome to The Three Northern Provinces!!!
