I am going to Beijing for a week and 15 days in Guangzhou,
Shenzhen, Macau, and Hong Kong. I will be there from Dec 10-Jan 01. I will probably be in Hong Kong for New Years. Please tell me places to see, things to experience, and where should I be at for Christmas. I know this is a difficult question to narrow down answers. Thanks!!! |

Well, it is very easy to spend the week in Beijing - my hometown!
You can spend the first day to visit Forbidden City, over 500 years old Ming dynasty palace together with Tiananmen Square. In the afternoon, visit the Summer Palace, a beautiful Qing dynasty summer resort and a classic imperial garden. Finish your day with a feast of Beijing Duck dinner! The second day you can go climb the Great Wall, together with the Ming Tombs. It will be out of the city. The Third day, see the Lama Temple - the second largest Lama Buddhist Temple in China after Potala Palace. In the afternoon, take the Hutong Tour where you can wander around the old town Beijing and visit some local people's house there. The Fourth day, see the Temple of Heaven in the morning, which is the signature Ming dynasty architecture. Then do some shopping in the Silk Market - if you like to bargain. And if you like, enjoy the Panda garden in the zoo in the afternoon. I think this is a good start for you and give you some free time for the rest of the week to explore the city after seeing those must sees. In Guangzhou, I would suggest a two days tour. You can visit Dr. Sun yat-sen Memorial Hall, Five Ram Statue and the Temple of Six Banyan Trees. And I will highly recommend an excursion to Ancient Nanfeng Kiln, a fascinating workshop over 500 years old which I just visited in Oct with my group. My group all commented that it's their highlight of Guangzhou, since it's not touristy and you can really appreciate that ancient art of wood fired pottery step by step and so close. Another highlight is the night cruise on the Pearl River! Macau it's an easy one day tour. HK is a full day tour: You can visit Aberdeen Fishing Village, where you can get a glimpse of the lifestyle of Hong Kong fishing folks. It is home of hundreds of people living on fishing junks. Their traditional lifestyle is dramatically juxtaposed against the modern high-rise community that fills up the nearby hillsides. Then visit Repulse Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong featuring traditional Chinese style. It is a picturesque example of early 20th century colonial architecture. Afterwards, shop at the famous open-aired market in Hong Kong - Stanley Market, which sells silk garments, clothing, arts, and crafts. The highlight is the bird’s eye view from the 373 meters high vantage point Victoria Peak, where you will experience an extraordinary view of skyscrapers and take in the breathtaking panorama of the city and the bustling harbor in the Kowloon Peninsula. Of course, HK is the shopping paradise, where I think Lady's Market and Temple Market (night market) are pretty good place to shop. Regarding the Christmas, I would say HK is the best place since the city light at night is amazing! I can help you arrange all the tours mentioned above if you like, with the hotels, meals, transportation and tour guide in each city as one package. After many years of ignoring animal activists cries for change, the Chinese government must listen. The animal fur trade is flooded with cat and dog pelts, all of which have been slaughtered and tortured beforehand. This kind of inhumane business must be shut down with penalty.

I guess you will be in Beijing from Dec 10 to 17 (one week) and for that, I suggest that you can try to visit the following: 1) Forbidden City - One full day 2) Great Wall of China - one full day 3) Temple of Heaven - one full day 4) Summer Palace - one full day 5) Tienanmen square - one full day 6) Beijing Zoo - half day (great for souvenir shopping)
I cant say much about Guangzhou, shenzhen and macau but Hong Kong... u can try to go 'Irish Pub' to celebrate new year. If you are celebrating Christmas in China, you will be disappointed esp in Beijing. I was there last year and they don't celebrate Christmas 'cos the guys have gone home for Christmas. the locals are not interested about Xmas for now but maybe trend will pick up in the future??? Have a good trip! |
