OK...tour companies for younger crowds....hmmm....I'm no longer in that age group, and even at my age, I would never consider joining a tour...If you obviously are in this age group, my advice: just get the Lonely Planet China guide and phrase book, buy your ticket, and dive into the country....

First of all you are going to get ripped off if you go with one of those groups, but that may not be something you can avoid.
Second, you're crazy. You have no idea what China is like do you? Social problems in China are really bad now and foreigners are getting attacked and robbed around every corner. The only reason you don't hear about them is because the government has a tight lock down on communications and they like to take those incidents and.....sweep them under ther red carpet if you will.......95% of crimes against foreigners go undocumented. I will say that China is much better in terms of serious crime like rape and murder, but smaller petty crimes like scams, robbery, physical attacks are astronomically worse. If you don't look or sound Chinese they will latch on to you like leaches until your walet is empty. Other poor coutries also have their share of scam but what makes China unique is how AGRESSIVE the locals are. They won't take no for an answer, and when it comes down to it even 80 year old ladies will resort to force in the end. One of my friends took a brick in the head from an old lady on the "Bund" in Shanghai (very popular and open tourist street) simply because he said no when she asked him for money. Do what you want, but I just want you to be informed about the dark side of China. Things aren't what they use to be. |
