What are some do's and don'ts for traveling to China? Can I bring an iPod or a laptop?

I'm traveling to China for the first time. If I can bring a laptop, will I be able to plug in my laptop at the hotel? How much money should I bring? Do they take travelers' checks? Can I bring a cell phone?....etc

depends on if you have "Dual Use" technology. I had to leave my laptop behind only once because when i bought it i signed a Non-export waiver. If you buy dell or gateway for example there is a very good chance you signed a non-export waiver.

Dont ask me why that is just what the custom people told me when they seen my laptop in my bags. I got it back when i got back but ended up paying 35 bucks a day for storage.
