When you walk out of the train station, follow the streetcar tracks to the main cross street. If you look to your left, you will see where the red light district is. It is located between the canal to your immediate left and the next canal behind it, which is about 8 or 10 short blocks , if even that. The redlight district runs from the main street in front of you, for about a mile South.
The rest of Amsterdam is just like any other city it's size. OH... when you are standing at the street corner, if you look just to your right, you will see a big hotel... I think it's the Princess (Another person just said it's the Victoria... I imagine that is correct) ... just behind that hotel is a nice market area where a lot of the locals shop and it's perfectly safe... at least for Amsterdam. Just be aware of your surroundings and don't take anything with you that you can not afford to lose, like passport or driver's license or money, because pickpockets are EVERYWHERE in Amsterdam and they are VERY good at what they do. |

I always stay at the Victoria hotel, just across from Centraal station. It is the perfect location, and a gorgeous hotel. It's on the Damrak near some great shopping, and it's also close to where you go to catch the canal boat rides. You can use the canal boats like a taxi, and take them to various places around the city, like the Ann Frank house, the museums, etc. It's kind of pricy if you're used to staying at a Days Inn or similar, but the service is great, it's safe and it's clean, and you can't beat the location. They also provide free train tickets to/from the airport.

I've been to Amsterdam 4 different times and there are many places to stay and never even know the Red Light District Exists. Amsterdam is separated into different districts and one is totally different from the other. If you go by train, as soon as you come out of the train station the touristic spot is straight ahead, to the left is the Red Light District and straight thru to the other side is the museums and historic areas. If you never walk down the streets in the Red Light District(only 2 or 3) you would never know the it existed.
