Default amsterdam ... cheap central located hotel?

do you know any good hotels , close to central station so you can easily walk with a suitcase to the trainstation without paying ridiculous taxi fares ,

hotel must be very cheap , with private shower in room , board is not important

As i also answered in a similar question:

I personally used the Leidse Square hotel last month.

Clean, simple, and decent breakfast included.
Added bonus - right next to the, you guessed, Leidse Square - one of the main areas for leisure in the city.

Also well within easy reach of everything else, via public transport.

At around 40 to 50 euro`s a night, it`s not too expensive.

If you need more info - let me know - you can contact me through my Y!A profile.

While i realise that you ask about the Dam square - you can forget about cheap.

Try the StayOk hotel. They used to be the youth hostels, but are now catering for everyone. Beside the low prices it is also nice to meet people like you from everywhere around the world while you have your breakfast together or your late morning coffee and exchange experiences. If you book in time the 1&2 person rooms are still available. Visit www.stayok.nl, They have an english site.
About transport: as all medieval cities in Europe the centre is pretty small, after all, people had to walk by foot. And even if you have to go to a 20th century part, public transport is always quite often (at least every 15 minutes) until a five minute walking distance to your hotel and cheap (less than 3 usd). The website of the hotel has a direction of how to get their by public transport

There is no "cheap" in Amsterdam, they put the prices way up as they know the tourists are mostly there just to smoke dope at the cafes.
