Other then the usual red light district and sex museem etc etc there is the anne frank museem which is away from all of that but to be honest by the time you get something to eat and explore a little it'll be time to get back on the ferry. Have a good time tho x

There are lots of attractions in Amsterdam to see....but understandably, the maintained ones are not free (not expensive, but not free).

Amsterdam is a great city to visit, and for a European capital city, is very walkable which cuts out paying for public transport - however, in Feb, well it could be very rainy (same as the UK) and so you might consider using the tram/bus network if you want get a feeling for the city in the 5 hours and not want to risk getting wet.

The IJ ferry connecting Centraal Station with the North of Amsterdam is a freebie if you like this kind of thing (quick journey)

Meandering around the small streets by the canals and multitude of bridges - it's all free. Then there is a big park close to Leidseplein called Vondelpark - if you are a people watcher - this can be fun, especially given the diverse characters that inhabit and visit the city :0) You can see the different area's here http://www.amsterdam.info/sights/ Renting a bike can allow you to see a lot more than walking, and it's not so expensive (cycling being the norm in Amsterdam)

The houses and architecture are alone worthwhile seeing if you like that kind of thing. Window shopping of course is free and there are endless boutiques, and small shops to poke around (as well as the larger typical ones).

Of course when you mention 'Window shopping' then the red light district is also going to come to mind, and by all means take a walk there to see what it is really about for yourself. - be it in the infamous areas, real window shopping in the little shops, boutiques et, or just

The Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market) on the Singel is worth a quiet amble around http://www.amsterdam.info/shopping/flowermarket/ - of course there is a lot to buy, but you can walk around for free. In fact there are lots of different markets - Albert Cuyp Market being one of the biggest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Cuyp_Market

There are also different events that take place during the year - e.g. Queen's day, Gay Pride Parade etc and these transform the city (for free) into even more of a party atmosphere http://www.amsterdam.info/events/ To see the festivals and events taking place during the day you are in Amsterdam, you can check a calender here (not all are free though) http://www.flyingpig.nl/agenda/calendar.php

Amsterdam is one of the coolest cities in Europe. Beautiful, hip, and laid back, with lots to do, lots to see, many pubs, food from all over the world and friendly people. A visit to this very beautiful city is sometimes like taking a walk in the 17th century, as the center of Amsterdam has a lot of charming architecture dating from this period. This is an excellent city to tour on foot or bicycle. However, while Amsterdam may boast a lot of 17th century architecture, that's about all that's old fashioned about the place.

In summer one of the best places to go for a relaxing afternoon is the Vondelpark. It is a great park, right in the center of things and very lively. With a bit of luck you can catch a (free) outdoor concert near the water. There are also a few trendy places in the park where you can sit and have a beer, such as the Blauwe Theehuis.
