We are going for our annaversary in a weeks time for a long weekend. I phoned the hotel asking how much it might cost to upgrade to a room with a balcony, some flowers and champagne. The woman said that the champers prices start at 70euro!!!!! I said i would have a think about it as im on a budget, but i have never phoned back. But i would happily forget about the champers and flowers for a balcony room overlooking Dam square, that would really be a highlight for me. The cost for one of these rooms is approx 400euro extra on top of the expensive room we already have - Amsterdam is so expensive!!!
Does anyone have any master crafty tips??? Thanks folks! I meant 700 euro, not 70, sorry. |

This isn't really expensive if you consider that you will ask for a view on one of the most marvelous sites in Europe and the most important National site in holland. 70 euro is darn cheap actually, if you compare it with London where you wouldn't get a rat hole in a dodgy bed and breakfast for that money.
You need to have realistic expectations. |

If you ask in advance you will get the normal "thank you for enquiring, the costs will be .... etc etc" A hotel will not give away a premium room in advance if there is still a chance of selling it at the premium price
Go there, at the time of check in, be nice, chat with them a bit, ask if the hotel is fully occupied, could you be "cheeky and ask if you could be considered for an upgrade"- if you have a special reason such as a honeymoon, anniversary etc then this often helps. In your case - do it without your hubby/bf and say you want to do it as a surprise but that he would kill you if it was expensive and "is there any chance you could do anything for me, I'd really appreciate it" etc etc Admittedly it depends on the mood of the reception desk person, and also if she is in a position of responsibility to make that decision or not..... but it's always worth asking. They see so many people who demand because "I am a customer and the customer is always right" that being friendly, approachable and sweet is a breath of fresh air I can tell you! |
