I went there for a day while traveling a few years back, and it was in the afternoon, just wondering around, when we noticed girls standing in the shop front windows! I didn't know which way to look.Though never felt unsafe, i guess because it was still daylight

I have passed through the part of town in many different times of day and night, (mostly when visiting people living just outside it,) and there is business going on 24/7, but most activity will be from late afternoon till deep in the night.

I would personally not care to walk through the area between 4 and 8 AM, but even then there are people on the streets.

Even as woman alone I do not hesitate passing through the area if that is the shorter way, and in the night even when it is the longer way, saver than the deserted streets in the shopping center of town.

But realize that you have to work on your own safety. Do not show that you carry money or valuables, if you have a camera on you, keep it in an innocent bag and even when it is around your neck, do not make photos of the girls and their customers, ever!
Pickpockets and pimps protecting the girls are your worst crime makers there, and photos taken of the girls are not liked at all.

And do not buy anything from peoples selling things on the street.
Either they are selling you crap or having some 'friends' following you to get your money from you or both.

From what my son says.....the red light district goes all the time. And most everything in the Dam is safe......no hard drugs....only soft drugs.
