yes actually they do, its not like shopping where there is a sale at the last minute it actually goes up because they know how important tickets are in a last minute emergency or for people who wait till the last minute so they know they can up the price, just like water at a club is more expensive than at a store or how expensive stuff is at an airport or hospital or concert, they know people will pay it so why not charge it.

Yes. For a couple of reasons.
Mainly because they can. Airlines and Hotels like to know well in advance how 'full' a flight or how many rooms will be full so that they can plan accordingly. A full plane is a properous flight, so if NOBODY made reservations until the last minute, the airline would assume the flight would not have any travelers. Keepin their flights full and booked ahead of time ensures revenue. If you book a flight NOW for October, you have paid for the flight and they HAVE YOUR MONEY now to pay bills and salaries. You'd think that at the last minute they would 'deal' to get a butt in that seat, but most times, no. They can gouge you a LOT for a last minute flight and they do and they can. |

Obviously, everyone else has told you that travel gets more expensive as you book closer to the date. (The actual bracket of time I have calculated, is around 3 weeks. As long as you book 3 weeks or more out, you are usually getting the best rate). Prices will always fluctuate depending on availability (the travel industry highly utilizes the law of supply and demand... limited supply, high demand= higher prices).
In response to your last minute deals, I usually check out Southwest airlines (I think right now they are offering a $49 one way/ I need to get away special), Airtran, or Jetblue airlines. Keep in mind, sometimes it is cheaper to buy 2 one-way tickets from either the same, or different carriers as opposed to 1 round-trip ticket. |

If traveling internationally, I would go ahead and book now. This is because international airfare tends to go "higher" in price and can be more difficult to book less than 2 months ahead of schedule. As for domestic, most fare's will go "lower" (temporarily) to ensure that the flight will be filled with as many passengers as possible. You can hook a good deal about 1 month before travel by doing this. However, this is not always the case and it depends on your itinerary.
