Default Air travel with a dog?

We have an 11 month old pug and we don't want to leave him behind while we travel to Florida during Christmas. Now I know that you have to go to the vet and get an okay and we are planning on going to today to make the appointment. I know I will be able to ask all of my questions then but I just want to know people's opinion and advice when traveling with a dog.

We are traveling from Newark, NJ to Orlando, Florida. We will have a 2 1/2 flight and then a stop over which will be around an hour wait until the next plane and then we are going non stop to orlando. So he would only be in his carrier for 2 1/2 hours. But I was still wondering if I should give him a children's benadryl or something like that to make it easier for him.
I forgot to mention this but yes he is going on the plane with me. He will be under my seat the whole time. I would not even think of putting him in the baggage compartment thing for dogs.

I was going to take mine to Michigan with me but my mom said that it's hard on animals to fly. She said that alot of things can go wrong like she might be afraid because she has never flewn before. Also if u are flying to flordia it will be really hot an ur puppy might die of the heat. I would not an your dog is only 11 months so I wouldent. Only if u can have it on the plane with you. If u have to put it under with the luggage than no it would not be safe. Sorry!!!!
