I'm not sure what you mean by an "outline" view. Do you mean "what does all the stuff in a fare ladder mean?"
If so, it is the cities on the itinerary, the airline, and the price for each segment. There will often be some additional symbols and costs at the end that represent various taxes and fees.
For example, a round trip from Detroit to Orlando on Northwest Airlines with a connection in Memphis might look something like this:
DTT NW /XMEM NW ORL 250.00 NW /XMEM NW DTT 250.00
DTT is the code for Detroit. NW is Northwest. /X designates a connection (meaning that you can't stop over in Memphis on this fare). ORL is Orlando. 250.00 is the fare for these segments before taxes and fees.
