It seems as though the future of air travel includes more point to point flights versus having everyone connect at a hub. The hub-and-spoke will most likely still play a huge role in air travel but I think more airlines will be using secondary airports which are less congested as well as using smaller aircraft because people want more frequency in flights since everyone has a different schedule.
Aircraft will probably be lighter and more fuel efficient as aircraft manufacturers get more used to working with composite materials. Some people will probably go with the micro-jet concept in which you fly in a small aircraft seating 10-12 people. Some start-up airlines are flying these small aircraft so that you do not have show up at a busy international airport and go through the hassles of waiting in line to go through security.
