Minors do not need identification for traveling on airlines. However, bring a copy of your son's birth certificate or a passport if he has one. I always carry these documents when I am traveling with my son.
Also, if you are traveling alone with your son (father isn't coming), it's not a bad idea to have a notarized letter from Dad giving you permission to travel with your son. I know this sounds crazy but I travel internationally with my son and I have been stopped by authorities asking if I have permission from his father (who is my husband!) to be traveling with him. I guess there are enough custody issues out there where this can be a problem. (This is especially an issue if you and your son have different last names).
