I am planning a trip to upstate New York in August, and I'm planning on visiting Canada while I'm in the area. I am a US citizen (with a valid California ID and US Birth Certificate), will I need a passport to drive or walk across the Canadian border?

At this time you do not need a passport to enter either the US or Canada by foot or by car. You will need your drivers license and it doesn't hurt to have your birth certificate either. As long as you are not doing anything wrong, it's no problem crossing the border. I live in upstate NY and cross frequently in Niagara Falls. I've crossed with people with licenses from Cali, Mass and Puerto Rico with no problem.

The US government continues to change the rules which tends to make life very confusing for everyone.
At this time you do NOT need a passport to drive across the border. A birth certificate is a good idea though. A passport would make it much simpler though. |
