I've been in SA a few times and I found it very easy to travel: buy a map (I've got a Glovebox road atlas from Mapstudio), rent a car and on your way. You can get fuel in almost every small village, you can get a B&B in almost avery small village in different price categories, ...
Staying in B&B is cheaper than hotels and it also gets you closer to the people. If you want to stay for longer periods in one place, renting a car might be to expensive. I have no experience with public transport but I'm told that's no problem on the "big axes" ... |

I live in South Africa. Very good country to visit with stunning tourist attractions and game farms. Every province is absolutely beautiful.
Always keep your personal belongings close to you. Keep your money and passport in a safe place. Crime is very high in South AFrica and they always target tourists. As other people have suggested, go onto websites of South Africa or buy the "Let's go" South Africa book for travellers. You'll enjoy it a lot, good luck! |

Also a born and bred South African. Please keep in mind that you will not find our cultures in the big cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban. This is international cities and will be the same as New York, London or Sydney. To live, and enjoy the fast difference in cultures visit the rural South Africa. Even though we have only 11 official languages, there are many more different tribes each with his own culture.

I come from South Africa. Well, you'll definatley love it there. There are 11 different languages which means there are 11 cultures. English, of course; Afrikaans, they love to watch rugby and have their braais (barbecues) whenevre they can. It's a great way to socialise, especially if it means rugby. Then in Durban, surfers paradise, you have the Zulu Nation. They are very traditional. The others are the Venda, Tswana, Xhosa, Sepedi, Sotho (they are very friendly people)Nguni people, Tsonga and Indebele (known for their very colourful huts). You can take tours of the different culture groups. Sometimes they'll offer you things like Mopane worms...try them. Don't spend too long in Johannesburg, it's not so safe. Rather move away to another city/town. The cultures are 'westernised' but they still go to their groups and celebrate when they need to. They all have huts, different ones for different ocassions...eg. if a girl gets married, they'll send her to one hut while the groom stays in another. It's very interesting to learn about these cultures. Overall, South Africa is a very nice place. Make the effort to go to Cape Town, absolutely splendid. We stand together as a nation. Try not to refuse anything they offer you, they could feel offended. Well, I hope you have a good trip to S.A. it will be an experience. Have fun!
