I am not sure of the current airlines but having flown to the USA from SA quite a few times try and get as direct and fast as possible. It is a long flight in anybodies book and if you have to sit in Paris or Rome for 8 or 9 hours then it becomes a very very long flight.
Try South African Airways, very good service and as good as any other airline.

the best would probably be South african airways. try flysaa.com, but be ready for a long haul 17 hour flight. its ver very long and you'll be stiff!! otherwise try flying through europe, just to break up the flight, but then again once you on the plane you just want to get home!
