Default travelling to south africa from uk?

hi there,
my husband is english and was denied his south african visa,so we're allowed to go for three months, though we want to go for four months,so we can spend christmas there,so was told to visit swaziland or lesotho for a few days,But dont know what to do about our return flight ticket; if we want a four month one,but is only allowed a three month ticket??will they allow him into south africa with a four month return ticket?
south africa house isnt an option,we've been stuggling to get through to them for two weeks now, when we aventually got through they told us they dont give answers over the phone,

In my experience SA immigration check return tickets. I reckon the best thing to do is book your return withing three months, but make sure you've got a changeable ticket, so after you've been to Swaziland or Lesotho and if you get an extra three months you can change it then. Be careful with your return date though, as early January gets booked up months in advance for returning to the UK from SA, so I'd advise planning on returning in late January. I'd recommend Mozambique for chilling out for a couple of weeks, it's pretty cheap and there are some fabulous beaches around Vilankulos.
