I want to get from Ijmuiden to Den Helder on public transport, ideally direct (not via Amsterdam), any ideas? I have looked at www.connexion.nl and it seems to have buses only to Haarlem and Amsterdam. I would be surprised if there was no bus from a major ferry port to reach Den Helder? Thanks for your help!

The best site to use is http://www.9292ov.nl It is only in Dutch but pretty easy to understand
Basically there are two different possibilities - one with one connection and the other with two connections. 2 connections (but less walking) Dept: "Ijmuiden veerbootterminal" > Walk 2 mins to Oranjestraat > Catch bus 74 direction "Heemskerk" (trip takes 22 mins). Get off at NS (railway) stattion Beverwijk > Take train direction "Hoorn" and get off at Alkmaar (trip time 22 mins) > Take train direction "Den Helder" (trip time 36 mins) 1 connection but more walking > Walk 14 mins to Zwaanstraat > Catch Bus 82 direction Amsterdam (trip time 35 mins), get off at Sloterdijk > Catch train direction "Den Helder" (trip time 1hr 9 mins) The best is if you check for yourself and then depending on the day/time it may vary. You can also see all the connection times and the fares If it is too difficult then you can call them (within NL) on 0900-9292 and they should be able to tell you over the phone in English Good luck |

I live close to IJmuiden and it is not a big ferry port.
It used to have a rail connection but they discontinued the service because of a lack of customers, years before the ferry terminal came. In the Netherlands we do not do long distance bus services, and the amount of customers would be near to non on most sailings. The best option is the one Bla bla gives as the two changes. Bus to Beverwijk and from there the train, the staff at the ferry terminal should be able to tell you where to catch the bus. The change in Alkmaar is an easy one, mostly on the same platform, with just enough time that you will be sure to catch the connection. You can also take a taxi to Beverwijk, certainly when you travel with a few people together. Alternatively you can also take the bus to Haarlem, and train it from there. It would add a few km to your journey but may mean a better connection to the boat and maybe a cheaper bus or taxi ride. This would give you the same trains as traveling via in Beverwijk. If you decide to travel to Amsterdam, the coach service the ferry offers is better than the local bus, quicker at least and not really more expensive, and also brings you to Centraal station in Amsterdam. |
