My bofriend and I are considering traveling to Thailand next year. Any ideas? What city to stay in? The best hotels? Anything else? Saftey?
I was thinking about Phuket. Is it in the Southern area that is unsafe? |

Safety is not really an issue in Thailand, provided you stay out of the Southern provinces....
Thailand has so much to choose from....so you would need to be a little more specific in what you want to get out of the holiday... Would guess....you would do a couple of days in Bangkok and see the sights there and then move on to a beach resort or island somewhere...again stuck for choice or travel up country to Chang Mai etc.... Not knowing how much you want to spend, what the interests are etc....very difficult to answer your questions |

First - stay in Bangkok for a few days. This will give you time to see the city and get used to time changes and the heat. Probably a good idea to return to Bangkok for your final night in town for some shopping and no worrying about your connecting flight breaking down and you missing your ride home.
There are two airports that service Bangkok, make sure you know which airport you fly out of if you intend to visit other cities. Hotels come in all price ranges - how much do you want to spend per night? Landmark Hotel (near the Nana Skytrain stop) on Sukhumvit Road will run you around $100 per night. Asia Hotel (right on a Skytrain stop) is around 60% chaper. Both have air, hot water, private toilet/shower, maid service, cable TV, etc. Cheaper places with air also available. Choose a hotel near the Skytrain route so you can use that rapid transit service. The Skytrain can take you to many areas in Bangkok as well connect you with the Ekamai bus station and the subway at Asok. Don't waste all of your time at a beach, beaches can be found all over the world, perhaps even in your own country. Visit Thailand to see the temples, national parks, ride elephants, shop and eat in good restaurants. Hotels are reasonably priced compared to many Western countries. Backpackers often head to Khao San Road for cheap hotels. No Skytrain in the KSR area though! Thailand is very safe. I wouldn't worry about that.
As others have said it depends what your interests are. Bangkok is hard to avoid and a bit of a 'must see' although it is a very frenetic city (22nd most populated in the world!). Highlights for me include the Grand Palace & Wat Pho. For shopping you can't beet Chatuchak Weekend Market which sells everything you can think of, although the Patpong Night Market is also good. Chaing Mai, in the North of Thailand (about 800k from Bangkok) is very touristic but has beautiful temples and is much more laid back than Bangkok. You can get there by night train/bus or internal flights. If you are into beaches, or particularly scuba diving then the beaches are worth a visit. The time of year you go, and of course how long you've got, will determine where is best to go. The Andaman coast is stunning but the rainy season there is May-November. The Gulf coast is flatter and gets rain October to January. There are all kinds of islands/beach resorts from the very touristic to the quieter and less developed (although how long they will stay this way is questionable). My favourite places are Koh Lanta and Ton Sai/Railay beach - both of which are accessible from Krabi. Again these are a good distance from Bangkok so length of trip will be a factor. |

I just got back from a few weeks in Thailand. I went from Bangkok to Golden Triangle to Chaing Mai to Koh Samui and finally to Phuket.
I visited seven luxury resorts. I have reviews of them at Bombastic Life - http://www.bombasticlife.com Good Luck and have fun. |

Thailand can offer quite diverse travel destinations for you, ranging from beach and island resorts, to riverside and lakeside resorts, to mountain and forest resorts to plain and valley resorts. Not to mention city living and shopping or village stay and local craftmanship skill. So it will be more of your choice of holiday style that you want while in Thailand.
You can have a look at this site for all the information you want on the places in Thailand: http://www.tourismthailand.org How long do you plan to stay in Thailand? This can help determine the number of places to visit for you. If you are looking at beach stay holiday, there will be options, besides Phuket. Will need more details to help you. Email me if you like for ideas on your holiday plan. |

Chiangmai, Chiangrai, Lampang, Prae, Khao Yai in Nakorn Ratchasrima (national park with wild life), Samui, Samed, Krabi, Bangkok, the list go on. It's sure fun to travel through Thailand.
Phuket is in the south. It's as safe as Bangkok, except when there was a Tsunami. If you're talking terrorists, they seem to be confined to four southern most provinces not Phuket. |
