I would like to spend a year traveling through Europe. I mainly want to spend time in Greece, Italy, Spain, France, and England, and I am not planning on staying in expensive hotels or eating in gourmet restaurants. How can I go about figuring out how much money this adventure will cost me?

I'm on a 10 months student exchange here in Germany. I travelled a bit, to Austria, other parts of Germany, and Poland and I'm going to Egypt in April. The cost of living really depends where you go, England and Paris are extremelly expensive so are some cities in Gemany. Poland is cheap and most of Eastern Europe is too.
I spend aournd 800 to 1000$ per month for health insurance, rent, food, necessities, clothes and travels etc. One little piece of advise, don't think you,re going to be able to rough it up in Europe and sleep in dorms and eat cold food all the time, I did that and I lasted about 5 days, in the end, I needed a confortable bed with no one else in the room, I needed to eat something good and warm but Europe is so beautiful that I would do anything to visit all of it, so I understand you! tipp: there are low-cost flights in Europe, very cheap you can fly from one city to the other for 20 euros, it's crazy, I suggest you rent a room, in Germany lotsa people want to sublent their college dorm room in Aug and Sept. you could stay there and take low-cost planes to other places. Just an idea though. |

this largely depends on your budget ..... remember that the dollar isnt fairing very well against other world currencies esp. the euro and pound which are the specific currencies you will be using @ the countries listed above.
Also you can look @ lonelyplanet guides and hostelworld.com for hostel stays.... much less expensive then hotels but im not sure of your age and what your level of comfort is..... but if you are looking for an adventure hostels are the way to go....lol. |

$1,000.00 a month is about $33.00 a day. Can you do that in the US? And I don't mean living at home either. Try going on the road for a month. If you can't do it then think again. I would imagine you're going to go through something like $50-60 on average a day. Multiply that by 365 and you get a really big number. But that's about what it's going to cost you. Have you thought about working while you're there? That might help.
Also, if you are intent on doing a lot of travelling, think about buying a cheap car somewhere. You can sell it when you leave. |
