It would depend on what sort of hotels you want to stay at. You can stay any where from $6 for a single to like in the US in the hundreds of dollars.

I would check with tripadvisor.com forum on Vietnam. Quite helpful. It will help answer your Dad's answers. Him going back will help him close a lot of doors.
